Scotland probably isn't the first place you'd think of looking when searching for vintage Indian furniture and home accessories but I've just discovered a gem of a store which, fortunately, also sells online.Read More
I have to admit the New Year has gotten off to a pretty sluggish start here at VKH HQ. In the depths of winter I struggle to find any sort of motivation and with the dreaded lurgy doing the rounds it's safer to batten down the hatches and stay toasty.
The murkiness can be used to our advantage though - it's a great time to invest in some good lighting to create an ambience that those hygge-loving Danes would be proud of. For this post I've teamed up with one of the UK's leading lighting suppliers, Litecraft, and I'm giving one lucky reader the chance to win this fabulous vintage glass bottle lamp, worth £79!
The best way to get a cosy atmosphere in any room is by layering and this applies to your lighting too. A single pendant in the centre of the ceiling will simply not suffice! Lamps, both floor and table, should be fitted with 'warm' bulbs: lighting temperature is measured in degrees Kelvin (K) and the higher the number the more blue (cool) the light becomes. Anything between 2700K and 3200K will be enough to recreate the intimate glow of candlelight. If you absolutely must have a centre light, make sure it is on a dimmer switch.
It's important to use task lighting: a table lamp by the phone for example, or an overhanging floor lamp next to your favourite armchair means you don't need to light the whole room at once which is preferable for hyggelig-ing. String lights or fairy lights draped over a mantle or placed in a non-working fireplace can add a magical touch.
The use of uplighters is a big no-no for the cosy and inviting interior. Light shed on to the ceiling will only enhance the feeling of space and, although this may be tempting in a smaller room, it's not terribly romantic! Goddess of the silver screen, Marlene Dietrich, didn't insist on always being lit from directly overhead to be difficult. It's because everyone looks better that way - just try it next time you take a selfie!
HOW TO ENTER Thanks to Litecraft, one lucky reader can indulge in some quality snug time with the addition of this charming vintage glass bottle lamp to their home. Fitted with an in-line dimmer switch, it's perfect for adding atmosphere to those hygge moments.
