Some people smoke, some people drink.  As a self-confessed property addict I can spend hours browsing the interwebs looking at homes I'll never be able to afford in a gazillion years.  In this section, I invite you to join me on this slippery slope to days wasted dreaming about how nice it would be to have a moat or one's own media room...

MOATED HALL HOUSE, ESSEX

This is Wynters Armourie in the delightfully-named Magdalen Laver, near Ongar in Essex.  One of the oldest moated hall houses in the county, this 7 bedroom detached property dates from the 13th century and is believed to have served as an armoury for Oliver Cromwell and his troops during the Civil War.

Every room has a considerable amount of character, from stone floors to wood panelling...

...but, although it has been significantly altered over the centuries (the last major works being done in the 1990s), with seven bedrooms and only two bathrooms there is definitely a need for some reconfiguration.

Planning consent was granted in January 2012 to extend the existing kitchen/family room and to create a new master suite on the first floor.  So, if your budget exceeds the £1.2m asking price, you could create the perfect family home within easy reach of the city and be king of your very own, ahem, moated hall house.

Wynters Armourie is for sale through Mullucks Wells, Bishops Stortford.
