IF YOU'RE LOOKING FOR SOMETHING WITH CHARACTER AND PROVENANCE HEAD NORTH OF THE BORDER FOR PIECES WITH A STORY TO TELL
Scotland probably isn't the first place you'd think of looking when searching for vintage Indian furniture and home accessories but I've just discovered a gem of a store which, fortunately, also sells online.
Scaramanga began in 1998 with a simple leather satchel. Founder Carl Morenikeji was so taken by the style and quality of it that, whilst on his travels around India, he sought out artisans who use traditional methods to create modern versions.
At the same time he began sourcing vintage furniture and so Scaramanga was born. With a small team of just 10 Carl, who heads up the company with his wife Emma, has created a wonderful treasure trove of original pieces.
Although the leather bags and accompanying accessories are the driving force behind Scaramanga, it is the furniture and particularly the old Indian items that really caught my eye. Below is a round-up of what's on my shopping list!
SET OF 5 HAND-PAINTED VINTAGE INDIAN POSTCARDS - £12.50
These postcards are hand-painted, in some instances with just a single bristle brush, and are typical of the folk art from Rajasthan. Usually depicting tales of mythology or scenes from history, Indian miniature paintings like this have been around for centuries.
OLD WOODEN TRUCK SIGN - £300
Colourful painted trucks are a common sight on Indian highways and always bring a smile to my face when I see them. This one was salvaged from a truck in Rajasthan and makes for an unusual wall hanging.
PAIR OF ANTIQUE MARWARI HORSE HEADS - £125
I love these wooden Marwari horse heads! Marwari horses are a rare and special breed native to the Marwar region of Northern India. Known for their inward pointing ears the Marwaris were used throughout history as a cavalry horse because of their loyalty and bravery in battle. Carvings like these were traditionally used on outer door posts as it was believed they would give strength and protection to the occupants.
VINTAGE WHITE CHEST OF DRAWERS - £325
This chest of drawers is perfect if you're looking to add a bit of shabby chic to your home. Its fantastic distressed finish is the real deal: it's not been made to look old, it is old! Because it is unusually low (just 37cm high) I think it'd look great in a hallway with a couple of cushions on top - a place to perch while removing your shoes.
Scaramanga has two stores in Scotland, in Fife and Edinburgh, but you can also buy online. Visit Scarmanga for more information.
