PANTONE COLOUR OF THE YEAR 2018

So here we are again - it's Pantone COTY time! After the mixed reception for 2017's Greenery the choice for next year seems to have been met with warm appreciation from the design community.

Ultra Violet, or Pantone 18-3838, is a futuristic shade of purple which, according to the press release, "communicates originality, ingenuity, and visionary thinking."   Although this will inevitably filter its way down in to interiors, the people at Pantone aren't suggesting we should all be painting our walls this colour - it is supposed to reflect what is happening in the world today and also guide us toward what is needed in the future.

The colour of the cosmos, it represents vast, endless possibilities and discoveries that have yet to be made.  It is the colour of spirituality (Mystic Meg, anyone?) and, after the mindfully meditative Greenery in 2017, it is saying that now is the time for action.

Purple is a colour that is often associated with non-conformity and artistic genius and Pantone cites the like of Prince, David Bowie and Jimi Hendrix for their individuality and obvious connections to the colour.

Interiors-wise there is a definite shift to the red end of the colour palette.  With Dulux naming a shade of dusky mauve, Heart Wood, as their colour of the year and blush pinks already firmly established we are creating warm and comforting homes during times of uncertainty. With Ultra Violet added to the mix however, there's also a sense of optimism that says anything is possible.  And it looks great with brass and gold.
